about
We had one day to record a few songs. The instrumental part of what was to become "Man's Body Theme" was done there. I had the task of taking a lovely instrumental piece and writing lyrics to it. So back here at home in LA, I had some thoughts about folks I know who felt that they were born in the wrong body, actually thinking of one young person in particular I had in mind, a very strong, smart and great person. Unfortunate our society can be so stubborn at acceptance of people who already have a hard time accepting themselves. At heart I always loved The Smiths, and Morrissey's lyrics, such as "Accept Yourself" is to me where the revolution is to be started, so I do love to refer to him, especially in that era. His lyrics always inspired me, he's almost like re inventing the lyric with true realism, and poetry. For me, I have these kinda small epiphanies and the lyric "Your toast in the toaster, needs time to brown" hit me and I thought: we are all just trying to understand, and some need more time than others to be understanding of the changes we are all experiencing, I get that, but at the same time, it's punk rock, like get the fuck on board, people! The train is heading out of the station!
I hope people realize that we are going through a big paradigm shift right now. The song intends to soften the blow a bit, but I wanted the lyric to find that right young person or persons that need to understand themselves better. This song is for those who will be the vanguard of this movement. I will be following them. Man's Body started out as a kinda cryptic idea and kinda mysterious to all of us, the first EP was called Man's Body Found, but not really found alive. So the next record is very much alive and Put Your Family In It is the title. I'm trying to push forward the idea that untethered to the idea of a body that we all inhabit, I find more interesting the idea of "the body of man" besides the traditional man vs. woman duality. We all inhabit a body, and we all have souls that don't really look that much different when we get them, it's what we do with it. Harsh judgment is evil, or at least hypocritical, and we need to end our differences and our shame. Sure, It's a simple pop song, but I see it as a bigger statement, and really forgetting the lyric and the meaning, it's just a sweet to the ear song, and loving toward the listener, but I wanted more.
lyrics
Man’s Body Theme (For Ian)
You put your right foot in,
Shimmy all the way down
You shake out your limbs,
You work out the sound, Your bread in the toaster needs time to brown.
Chorus: (3X)
I wanted More, I wanted more,
More more,
You got a man’s body Found.
You put your left foot in
Wiggle to fit
Get it together, do the lift
We don’t get pregnant, so stop making wars
Chorus: I wanted More, I wanted more, More more,
You got a man’s body Found
All around this globe, Boys and Girls are born, may they fill their hearts with love not scorn
If we don’t learn how to connect
Bodies Souls and Minds go sour
Let’s promise at this hour
To make life sweet
We need all of our bodies, Rinse Wash repeat.
No time for hate, can’t erase or delete.
